"Freebie" Measurement: Capacity Review (5.MD.1)

Hi There!  So much has happened in the past week!  Since I last blogged, our beloved Ozzy passed away on Saturday 2/16/13.  :(  He was 11 years and 2 months old.  We know he's in a better place, but it doesn't change the void our family feels.  I wasn't sure if I would be feeling a blog post this week; however, I'm committed to building this blog and want to stay consistent.

On that note, I've created a short review sheet for students to review capacity measurement (standard and metric) to satisfy part of the Common Core strand 5.MD.1.  You can download the document here. I will continue to post freebies as I go through this short unit in math and hope they are helpful for any 5th grade teacher out there tackling the Common Core.  If you have any ideas to share on measurement I would love to hear them. Have a fantastic weekend!
The link is in color, but I didn't want to print 18 colored sheets at home or school. :)

Freebie-Infer With Calvin and Hobbes

In 5th grade we are constantly practicing how to infer things from a text.  Recently at our grade level planning, a seasoned teacher shared how to practice inferencing with comics.  As a class we did 7-9 on the sheets and then the children practiced independently 1-6 on the sheets.  The results were fantastic and I just wanted to share her wonderful idea.  You can get your copies of the practice sheet here (page 1, page 2, and page 3).  What activities do you do for the children to practice inferring?

Food, Fractions, Freebie

We are wrapping up our primary focus on fractions next week, well until it's time to start reviewing for our state tests anyway.  That being said, I thought it would be fun to bring some more of what I loved in the lower grades to 5th grade.  Hence the creation of Food Fractions!  Late next week we are going to make Rice Krispy treats as a class.  The children are so pumped to "cook" at school during math time.  I created a fraction recording sheet  (click the name of the doc to get your "freebie") with the original recipe from Kellogs.  Basically, the children will have to work independently to figure out they need to double the recipe for everyone in the class to have a piece of the action.  Once they figure it out, they will work with a partner to double the fractions.  After all children have completed the task we will make the treats.  Should be a fantastic time had by all.  What do you do to complete a unit on fractions?
